The Rick Report: Game #6
Toronto Raptors 89 Denver Nuggets 76
Toronto 4-2
November 10th, 2003

Before we get into the actual game let's take the time to pat ourselves on the back for everyone's contribution to the Sit For The Cure. Rick Brunson has successfully returned from a debilitating LQC injury. It was an emotional moment with 32.4 seconds left in the game when Rick took to the court for the first time. He calmly did nothing for his whole time out there but the fact that he's out there playing NBA caliber ball is a triumph in itself. If there were a statistic on the scoresheet for heart Rick would have had the game-high. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. In the pantheon of comeback stories this ranks just behind Bernard King's return to all-star form after two years of knee surgeries and therapy.

The Rick Report
In case you missed it here was the actual transaction story as filed by The Associated Press: "The Toronto Raptors activated guard Rick Brunson from the injured list Sunday. The Raptors needed another point guard because starter Alvin Williams' sore left ankle has limited him to 20 minutes a game. To make room, forward Chris Jefferies was put on the injured list with a lower back strain."

Apparently Chris Jefferies afro is getting so high that his back can't support it. But let's get back to our main story and tally up how the
point guard minutes are distributed now...

Alvin Williams: 15 minutes
Milt Palacio: 33 minutes
Rick Brunson: 32.4 seconds

It may not seem like much but it says a lot that Coach O'Neill has enough confidence in Brunson that he was on the court protecting that 13 point lead with 32.4 seconds left on the clock. The way he half-jogged to centre while Milt Palacio dribbled out the clock was a shining example of how professionals play their hardest even when the game seems out-of-reach. I hope the kids out there were watching and learned something.

Lost in Brunson's shadow Vince Carter had a stellar afternoon with 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists. Milt Palacio was solid (meaning that next game he'll suck) with 14 points and 6 assists. Mengke Bateer is still perfect from the field after going 1 for 1. These three carried the offensive load as the Raptors posted their highest shooting percentage game of the season at 48.7% and had their second highest point total with 89. Can it be a coincidence that the offence improved with Rick Brunson newly activated? I don't think so!

Game Notes
  • The awesome Raptor defense gave up 32 points in the 2nd quarter.
  • Can Lamond Murray just change is name to "3 for 12"?
  • Former Raptor, now Nugget Marcus Camby had a tough day as he only played 14 minutes. Word out of the trainer's room says that Camby broke his hand in several places while catching a towel thrown to him. This was just moments after shattering his pelvis while ripping off his tear-away pants.

Does this look official?  It ain't. (C) 2003 Rick Brunson Fan Club -
