This was a scary victory. I don't want to downplay the game and the effort of the Raptors because they deserve praise for a big win. The problem is that after the game all a fan could think about was the status of Chris Bosh's shoulder. The Raptor bench is notoriously short to start with (just ask Lamond Murray) and to lose Bosh for any period of time would mean minutes forced upon Jerome Moiso or the newly acquired Robert Archibald, also known as The Scottish Scrub.

Another player whom you would assume would get more minutes in the event of a Bosh injury is Lonny Baxter, but he didn't even play in this game so you have to wonder about his health or perhaps Coach O'Neill's confidence in his skills. That's the assumption that has to be made, as it is puzzling as to why Baxter wouldn't get minutes against a fellow wide-body like Jahidi White. Perhaps Coach O'Neill wanted to give Bosh a chance to learn about how to play against players 8 times his width, but the situation remains that if Baxter had been in the game against White, Bosh might not be injured right now. Of course, White limited his own minutes by being whistled for 5 fouls in a mere 13 minutes so he wasn't much of a concern in this game save for his pummeling of the rookie.

Donyell Marshall was the star of the game for the Raptors with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Marshall also made what was the key shot of the game. The Suns had battled into a tie with the Raptors in the third quarter but Marshall nailed a big three pointer with 27 seconds left in the quarter. This was a huge momentum builder for the team as it started off an 11-2 run that was the game-breaker. Solid games were also had by Alvin Williams (13 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds), Vince Carter (23 points) and Jalen Rose (16 points, 5 assists). After completely disappearing in the third quarter, Rose stepped it up in the 4th with some sweet passes and a couple nice baskets.

Of course the Raptors should also thank Suns interim coach Mike D'Antoni for his great idea of leaving Anfernee Hardaway in the ballgame for the 4th quarter so he could jack up terrible jump shots and provide zero defence. Donnell Harvey, who had killed the Raps early, only played 15 minutes despite the fact that everyone knows that size inside gives the Raptors big problems. As well, Stephon Marbury sat on the bench during that 11-2 run while Leandro Barbosa (ranked 18th in the NBA for turnovers per 48 minutes) ran the show. Apparently this is one head coaching job D'Antoni doesn't want. If you're reading this Jerry Coangelo, I am available for a very modest price.

Game Notes
  • Chris Bosh is to Jahidi White as bug is to windshield
  • Rod Black's favourite saying is "making hay," reconfirming a previous Rick Report game note: Rod Black is an idiot.
  • Before Bosh hurt his shoulder he was 1 for 9 with 5 turnovers. Maybe White did the Raps a favour.

Does this look official?  It ain't. (C) 2003 Rick Brunson Fan Club -
