Brunson Recalls Fond Memories at Christmastime
December 22nd, 2003
This week Rick Brunson admitted that this Christmas has been just a little bit more special than ones previous. So many miraculous things have happened recently that Brunson feels especially blessed during this holiday season.
It was just a few weeks ago that Brunson was orphaned at the end of the Raptors bench. A couple of other orphans were there with him but he still felt alone and unwanted. This was still a brand new city for him and the big city has a way of making one feel small. He felt he had nowhere to turn for help despite being racked by injuries that might not just keep him from playing but also permanently stunt his growth.
Brunson's prayers were answered by a charitable older white gentleman. This great man made it his mission to take in the unwanted of Toronto and give them a loving home. Brunson was whisked from the mean streets of Toronto and was soon living the high life of penthouse apartments and motherly housekeepers. Other orphans joined him there. Brunson didn't always get along with one of them but now they've grown close enough to consider each other brothers and they live together with their fatherly benefactor. Now Brunson hopes most of all that all three of them can gather around the Christmas tree and recall their fondest memories of the past month.
It's an unusual situation but it takes diff'rent strokes to move the world.
Not all of the memories of the past few weeks have been wonderful but things have always worked out in the end. For example, just after joining the Chicago Bulls a social worker from the NBA arrived to inquire about the living conditions for the newly adopted Rick and Chris Jefferies. That rascal Rick attempted to eavesdrop on Mr.Drummond's conversation with the social worker and by taking several sentences out of context he and Chris believed that they will soon be traded away because "scrub players belong with scrub teams." Rick and Chris went through some hilarious hi-jinx in order to prove they belong but in the end Mr. Drummond proves that he wants to keep them right here at "home." The Bulls are a scrub team no matter what anybody says.
Then there was the time that Mr.Drummond's snobbish and socialite mother (Larry Johnson guest stars) arrived in town. She definitely didn't like these two new ragamuffin "grandsons" and let her own son know it. Where was that delightful Michael Jordan whom she loved to death? This caused Mr.Drummond much consternation but Rick eventually teaches his new grandmama a valuable lesson about what's really important about a person. It's not always about winning, sometimes it's about getting a good draft pick.
Finally, this unusual family will all have a laugh as they recall the time that Rick put Mr.Drummond's goldfish in the hot tub and accidentally killed it. Mr.Drummond sure was angry but Rick didn't know much about how goldfish live.
He certainly believed that Goldie would be much more comfortable in the nice warm water of the hot tub just like Rick does after a hard day of butt-slapping. In order to keep Rick from a punishment Chris declares that a fair trial must be held for Rick. Chris even convinces the housekeeper Mrs.Garrett-Skiles to act as the judge. My, what fun they had with that trial. Everyone bowled over with laughter as Rick said, "Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Scottie Pippen?"
Yes, ha ha, what are you talking about? That's about all we have time for on this special one-hour retrospective Christmas show. Rick, Chris, and Mr.Drummond all wish you the happiest of holidays. Join us next week when Chris gets a real job to prove a point to Mr.Drummond and to earn money to buy his own pair of shiny disco skates. Everything looks fine until Chris gets fired on his very first day for sleeping on the job!
Rick Brunson's once dire future is now bright indeed. Someday he might even run for the governor of California if all goes right. Things don't look too bright for Chris Jefferies though. He might end up getting involved with drugs and shoot a crack dealer. But he might just put it all together and appear in a movie with Corey Feldman.
