Raptors Cut Brunson, Retain Rick Brunson .com
Addition of Palacio, Murray, to End of Bench Contribute to Brunson Ouster
December 3rd, 2003
In a hastily called press conference this afternoon, Glen Grunwald addressed rumours that the Raptors have cut guard Rick Brunson and answered questions as to the status of Rick Brunson .com. Opening the press conference, Grunwald stated "I know you've heard my comments about Rick (Brunson) and I know you are all very, very concerned about Rick Brunson .com." He went on to add "I want to personally ensure all Toronto fans that we have no intent to cut Rick Brunson .com."
Brunson, who signed with the Raptors on August 13th, is expected to be cut or traded on December 15th, the earliest such a move can be made under league rules. He didn't travel with the team last night to Philadelphia, and general manager Glen Grunwald confirmed they were cutting their ties; Brunson is likely to be released. "This just wasn't a good fit for him," Grunwald said.
When asked if Brunson had been 'a favourite' of his as was reported, Raptors coach Kevin O'Neil, who was also present at the conference, replied, "Yes, I have always enjoyed Rick Brunson .com." When the question was restated, O'Neil corrected himself saying that he did like Rick Brunson, the player, as well but added that "he's not as funny. I mean, did you read that Doc Rivers, George Karl story? Shiiiiiieeeeeeeeet."

At his farewell press conference Wednesday, Rick Brunson ponders paying for courtside tickets while Glen Grunwald laughs and laughs and laughs at Rick Brunson .com
|
"When we made this trade (the three-for-three with Chicago), it was really not a great situation for Rick," Grunwald said. Although Grunwald acknowledged that Brunson has some wicked mean bench-sitting skills, he stated that "We have Jalen (Rose), Alvin (Williams) and Milt (Palacio) who are going to be ahead of him in the rotation, so I think it's a matter of finding a sitting situation for Rick that will work for him. I don't think this was the sitting situation he signed on for."
On a more positive note, Grunwald explained that he was "very excited about the new direction of Rick Brunson .com" and added that, even with the dismissal of Rick Brunson, there would be no lack of material among the remaining players.
When questioned directly, Rick Brunson admitted that he was not very upset at being cut. "This really doesn't change much for me," Rick responded. "I mean, I'm still getting paid, and I'll still be sitting on my ass, I just won't have to practice anymore. I guess I'll have to pay for my tickets now, too. Damn!"
