Michael Vick's pathetic, sobbing pleas go unheard
October 13th, 2003

When Michael Vick first received the news, the blood seemed to drain from his face. His one good leg trembled, and then gave out beneath him as he collapsed on the floor of the Atlanta Falcons training facility, wailing inconsolably and overcome with mental anguish. According to Rocky Colburn, the assistant strength and conditioning coach who was with Vick at the time, it took more than an hour before he was finally able to bring all of his violent arm-thrashing and eye-gouging under control.

At last, strapped to a gurney as his madness slowly abated, coherent words could be made out. "Rick... No, God, not Rick, please. Why Ricky, why?"

Michael Vick was referring of course to NBA point guard Rick Brunson, a man with whom he'd developed a special bond over the years. The two were bound by friendship; bound by the loneliness that comes with true greatness in professional sport; bound by their parallel careers as floor / field generals on their teams; and now bound by a final, devastating fact.

Rick Brunson was set to appear on the cover of his own signature sports video game.

It was just too much for Vick to handle after already suffering a broken fibula at the hands of the now infamous video game cover jinx. He could bear his own pain, but the inevitability of his NBA counterpart also falling to injury or something even worse was not a reality he was equipped to face.

Vick made one final, desperate, tear-drenched plea over the phone for Rick to reconsider his decision, but all he got was the answering machine. "Hi, you've reached Rick Brunson! I'm at the absolute pinnacle of my career now, and will no longer be answering your calls. Please leave a message, and my people will contact your people. Maybe."

Michael Vick is not expected back on the field this season, or perhaps ever again.

RBCB Sets Unattainable New Standard In Sports Gaming Realism
A totally independent review from GMR magazine
October 13th, 2003

It seems like every year another so-called 'innovation' in the sports gaming industry comes along, a glossy new title that inevitably sends the competition scurrying back to the drawing boards for next year, hunting for ways to incorporate the one or two sad new gimmicks that were the sole differentiating factors.

As video game reviewers, it is of course our sworn duty to sift through the seamy underbelly of this admittedly whorish industry, not allowing ourselves to be fooled by a little makeup, to find that rare hooker with a heart of gold, and bring it to you with as unbiased an opinion as we can muster up.

Download the User Manual It's in that spirit that we bring you 'Rick Brunson Championship Basketball', an astounding first effort from RB Sports that sets the bar so much higher for basketball simulations that the competition can really only throw their hands into the air and give up. You can't even imitate an achievement like this, let alone duplicate it.

From the stark intensity of the Match Up Mode, where you challenge Rick Brunson himself to a game of trash-talk-filled 1-on-1, to the gritty realism of the 82-game Season Mode slug-fest, to the ultra-cool Retro Mode that transforms every element of game play into a distinctly 70's ABA look and feel, you have never experienced a sports title that offers the depth of attention and sense of ultra-reality you will get from RBCB.

Take it from us. If you are planning on downloading only one free sports game this year, download this one. You will not be disappointed. We, as a truly independent gaming magazine, stake our integrity on it.
