Antontio Davis Still Not Traded
September 27, 2003
If you don't include the happennings of 8/13 then the biggest non-news for the Toronto Raptors this off-season has been the status of Antonio Davis. Although there has been no official statement made to the public it has been reported that Davis is unhappy in Toronto and has asked to be traded. His family has moved to Chicago so that Davis's kids don't learn the Satanic metric system. Since this has become public knowledge so many possible trade rumours have come crawling out of the workwork that it's near impossible to determine what is real and what is speculation.
Fortunately the crack news staff here at Rick Brunson .com have a mole inside the Raptor Front Office. The mole has revealed to Rick Brunson .com the actual proposals that have come across the desk of Glen Grunwald over the past couple of weeks. As well, our mole has provided extra insight as to why Grunwald has not pulled the trigger on some of these deals. Some of you may be surprised at the number of deals that have been offered. It was believed that Davis's huge contract made him almost impossible to trade but there are many other players in the league who make a similar amount of money that can be offered.
Apparently the three way deal between Portland, New Jersey & Toronto involving Davis, Dikembe Mutombo & Rasheed Wallace was never seriously considered by the Raptor's brass. The team believes building a giant 8-foot scarecrow would be a lot cheaper than bringing in Mutombo as well as more effective in handling the ball.
We verified all the following deals with the RealGM Trade Checker. Although the deals vary there is one common denominator that seems to nix all of these deals -- Rick Brunson. Wisely Grunwald is refusing to give him up.

To Houston: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson
To Toronto: Cuttino Mobley, Moochie Norris, Yao Ming
Grunwald Analysis: We almost pulled the trigger on this deal but we figured we already had a giant Chinese guy on the team except our giant Chinese guy has proven playoff experience. We also don't like giving up Brunson's tough defense. Sure Mobley and Norris would provide two more offensive options but that's not what wins games in the NBA anymore. As well, Moochie shaved his head in the off-season so Brunson is now the keeper of the best afro amongst this group.

To Sacramento: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson
To Toronto: Mike Bibby, Bobby Jackson
Grunwald Analysis: Remember last year when there was the big controversy over whether the Kings played better with Bibby or Jackson at the point? Well we don't want that kind of distraction here.

To San Antonio: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson
To Toronto: Tim Duncan
Grunwald Analysis: Are you crazy? Two players for one? That is ridiculous! Two heads are better than one. Strength in numbers! I'd give some passing consideration to a Brunson for Duncan straight-up trade but asking me to throw in Antonio Davis is insane.
|
To New Jersey: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson
To Toronto: Kenyon Martin, Aaron Williams, Rodney Rogers, Richard Jefferson
Grunwald Analysis: Other than the fact that I'm kind of afraid of Kenyon Martin this seems like a good deal. I was about to go for it but New Jersey retracted the offer when they realized that they would have to deal with both Kendra Davis and Joumana Kidd.

To Detroit: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson, Michael Bradley
To Toronto: Ben Wallace, Chauncey Billups, Darko Milicic
Grunwald Analysis: No, we've already picked up the key to Detroit's success the past couple years when we acquired Michael Curry. We've already fleeced Joe Dumars once and now he's trying to get back at us by grabbing Brunson. Besides, everybody says that Michael Bradley has bulked up this year. We all know that he was only 15 pounds away from being an All-Star calibre player last year.
|
To Dallas: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson, Mengke Bateer, Ken Johnson
To Toronto: Raef LaFrentz, Steve Nash
Grunwald Analysis: Seriously, what good would come from having a Canadian guy on the team? I don't understand why people keep pressing me to pick up a Canadian guy. We need somebody the crowd can identify with, someone like Rick Brunson.

To LA Lakers: Antonio Davis, Rick Brunson, Mengke Bateer
To Toronto: Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal
Grunwald Analysis: This would put us over budget for the season. No can do.

Since Rick Brunson has only recently signed with the Raptors none of the following deals could be made until December 15th anyways so if Grunwald does lose his mind expect Davis to be a Raptor until at least mid-December.
Rick Brunson .com has contacted a few GMs around the league regarding these deal but no one would go on the record. Off the record they claim that if they were going to take on an albatross of a contract like Davis's they would have to get Brunson as well to even out the deal. One GM claimed that "if we're going to shell out 12 million clams for a big whiny baby we might as well pay the minimum for a guy to slap his butt."
